Poperetta Concert to Launch exciting 2011-2012 Opera Series

The Central Florida Lyric Opera will inaugurate its 2011-12 main stage season with an elegant evening of romantic music in a brand new show entitled Poperetta on Sunday afternoon, October 23 at 3:00 pm at the Lake Sumter Community College Paul P. Williams Auditorium.  This performance will also be given in the Villages at the Church on the Square on October 21, 5 & 7:30 PM.

Long before Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice, Lerner & Loewe, and even Rodgers & Hammerstein, American and European audiences thrilled to the glorious musical theater of composers like Offenbach, Strauss, Lehár, Kálmán, Herbert and Romberg. Opulent costumes, elaborate sets, and attractive singers and dancers helped catapult their works to the peak of the entertainment world of their time, but the piece de resistance was the music—the beautiful music! Still connecting with us today are songs like “Brüderlein,” “Stout-hearted Men,” “The Merry Widow Waltz,” “Vilia,” “Lover Come Back to Me” and “Serenade.”

American operetta appeared in the midst of European imports from the 1860’s, and the era of American operetta spanned the last decade of the 19th Century into the first decade of the 20th, and included works by such greats as the March King, John Philip Sousa (Desirée and El Capitan), and Victor Herbert (The Fortune Teller, Babes in Toyland, The Red Mill, Naughty Marietta, Sweethearts, and Eileen).

Operetta has been greatly popularized throughout the 20th Century by many popular singers such as Mario Lanza, Nelson Eddy & Jeanette MacDonald, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Beverly Sills and even Julie Andrews and Frank Sinatra helped sustain the popularity of operetta into the modern day.

In this Central Florida Lyric Opera performance of Poperetta, the audience will swoon to arias, love duets and other romantic ensembles from the world's most popular and beloved operettas including, Sweethearts, Naughty Marietta, The Merry Widow, Student Prince, Rose Marie and many more. This new Central Florida Lyric Opera production features the Resident Artists of the Central Florida Lyric Opera with Maestro Bill Doherty at the grand piano.
